Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is taking up a whole 151.4GB of space on PS5 SSDs after its day one patch was applied earlier today. The game was a somewhat reasonable file size during the one week of early access to its campaign, but a 40.156GB update to get it ready for Friday's launch has changed things. PS5 users now have a title taking up more than one-fifth of their internal SSD.
It was thought that Activision's decision to break the upcoming Warzone 2 away from Modern Warfare 2 would reduce its digital footprint, but that doesn't appear to be the case. While there is a separate package you need to download for the next big Battle Royale title, it takes up a tiny 2.55GB. The good news is you can delete the single player campaign once you're done with it, and the same goes for the co-op mode Spec Ops.
Call of Duty games are notorious for taking up huge amounts of space on console hard drives, with 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at points closing in on 200GB. Since Modern Warfare 2 already begins life at 150GB, it would come as no surprise if it too took up just as much space.

It'll take up exactly zero GB of my drive.
Roll on Friday!
Yeah warzones definitely baked into the game as I knew it would be fool me once Activision but not again lol
I'm fully convinced it's that big just so you can't have many other games installed at the same time so you just default to COD. 😄
so glad i dont do cod and havent for a long time
What happened to Kracken reducing the games install size? Answer, the PS4 is holding these games back (again)
When I saw the 40GB update I assumed it was replacing the original! 150GB is crazy.
I picked it up on Steam and after this morning's patch the size has gone from 30GB to 70GB. I would've expected the PC version to be bigger.
@Luigia this whole CoD client has totally blown up over the years… the best version of Kraken or whatever tech couldn’t do something about it.
How the hell are these 6hr campaign games even bigger 40GB, I'm not sure it even has ND's type of cutscenes. So what at all is taking up all that space...
Doesn't make sense, must be what @Korgon said then.
and this is why i won't be getting this. Its disgusting that they do this.
Wow ya'll really do be playing CoD games.
40gb?! There's update patches, and there's adding in huge chunks of missing game. This was clearly nowhere near finished when being manufactured.
It is ridiculous... It is programmed in Flash, or what? What a waste of free space for ordinary shooter. One can understand this unbelievably gargantuan pile of code for 100+ hours JRPG, but shooter?
...OK someone think that value of product lies in meaninglessly huge world (Ubisoft), the other think it is in meaninglessly huge installation (Activision)...
Have you heard that the disc apparently only contains around 70mb of data? Its literally a licence check for physical owners making you question the point of it really.
Its absolutely ridiculous in this day and age that the game remains so large. No excuse.
@Reeneman lol! Well native PS5 ports of PS4 games usually take up half the space so hopefully the next COD WarZone 3.0 is 60-70Gb only 🙏🏻
@Rob_230 I think it might be so you don’t have space for other games and play more COD. There’s no other reason aside from pure laziness, and I doubt that.
@djlard Not even Rockstar games would take this much.
I thought they were going to improve on this? I get that these are big, highly detailed games — but 150GB is ridiculous.
I remember what a hassle it was just to download the MW 1 campaign. Add-ons if I remember right and additional other packages before the campaign could even begin. I’ll be skipping COD until they fix the mess they created.
@Rob_230 not surprising but then again the disk would be pretty useless anyway since youd have to download huge updates & the campaign is relegated to a dlc download
@Jaz007
Imo I think it is laziness and poor optimization.
I mean I’m used to it. Cold War was even larger.
@Rob_230
Yepp. Cold War and Vanguard were the same way. The disc is just there to verify a legitimate license.
Cold War did at least have a map and bots so you could do something while you waited. It was like 5 gigs actually on the disc. My buddy got it physically but I know how Activision has always been so I bought it digitally.
Now that I think about it all my multiplayer games are digital.
So if you buy this and have 2K23 installed then more than half of your SSD storage is pretty much gone with just two games!
I'm confused. NBA 2k23 was also about 150GB. Both that and COD are being sold physically on an Ultra HD Blu ray, which can hold up to 100GB. So these games are essentially digital only. I'm a physical gamer and this is so disappointing to see. I keep hesitating on purchasing a PS5 or XBox Series X right now because of this. These companies have got to figure this out.
it’s funny because the best CODs are only like 7-10GB 😂💀💀😂
Just let me buy the campaign as a standalone purchase...
File bloat at its worst!
Another year, another Call of Duty skip for me. Shame, I thought about at least trying it this year but they cannot get this under control. And yes, I do think this is intentional bloat.
Ridiculous. It’s not going to stop me from playing as I don’t keep many games on my PS5 at any given time to begin with, but still, I’d be interested in hearing the devs take on why the bloated file size.
@DETfaninATL
Could be many things.
1. Their compression is terrible.
2. Poor asset control. Basically stuff is in the files that shouldn’t be there.
3. Developer laziness and poor optimization.
It’s really weird too. Because COD games, at least from a performance standpoint, are stand out titles. They always run at basically locked framerates, the campaigns are rarely buggy (multiplayer is another matter but they tend to be faster at fixing those issues than the Battlefield devs), and they always push the visual envelope. I’ve played through the campaign and MWII is very, VERY pretty.
But it seems like in regards to file size they just say screw that phase of development optimization. There’s no reason these games should be this large.
100 gigs I understand. But 140 and above? That’s nuts.
Pretty much what i expected if i'm being honest..i had a sneaking suspicion it was going to top out around the 100 gig mark but this news woke me up faster than my morning cuppa..i remember titanfall taking forever to install on the pc and a large chunk of space because of uncompressed sound so i wonder seeing as call of duty uses the same highly modified source engine if thats what is taking up the space. It would make sense to me as the sonics and audio on call of duty has always been superb on my system and far and away is better than every other shooter out there..
@Jaz007 true but rockstars games never perform anywhere near as good out of the gate either 🤣
It's God dam lucky I'm getting fibre 500 next week cause this would take a full 48hours to download on a poor internet connection 🤦
@Luigia What makes the situation worse is that the ps4 is built like a tank..they just won't fail so people upgrade.
@zebric21 PS4 must surely be the most underpowered console of its generation but created games that could never have thought possible.
When something like Warzone that has only ONE map is around 100GB you know something in the development pipeline isn't right. There should be far better efficiency than this.
Honestly I think they take it as a badge of honour that they are (one of) the largest games on the market.
